Student/Business Professional Networking Symposium

In celebration of National GEAR UP Week, September 23-27, 2013, University of Washington GEAR UP hosted a Student/Business Professional Networking Symposium on Thursday, September 26th at the Red Lion Hotel in Yakima.

Local business professionals working in STEM-related fields attended.   One hundred 8th & 9th grade UW GEAR UP students from the Yakima Valley were introduced to local STEM-related business professionals, learned about education and job skills necessary for STEM careers, and began the conversation regarding potential mentoring/internship opportunities.




Dr. Sheila Edwards Lange, University of Washington Vice President of Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity, spoke about University of Washington’s commitment to STEM education. Student speaker, Alexa Celerian, a recent University of Washington graduate, shared her journey through her college STEM major and her future goals and plans to gain employment in her STEM field.

Students from the following school districts participated:  East Valley, Wapato, Toppenish, Granger, Sunnyside, Grandview, Goldendale, Wahluke, Royal, Zillah and Mt. Adams.
