2013 VEX World Robotics Competition
Five UW GEAR UP VEX Robotics teams competed in the 2013 VEX World Championships in Anaheim, CA, April 17th – 20th, 2013 where more than 15,000 students converged with educators, mentors, industry leaders and community members from 24 countries to demonstrate their engineering and problem-solving skills.
“Competitive robotics programs like the VEX Robotics Competition, provide an excellent opportunity for hands on STEM learning that will make these students unstoppable in any career path they choose”, said Jason Morrella, president of the Robotics Education and Competition (REC) Foundation. “These students are the leaders of their generation and we expect to see great achievements from them in the future,” concluded Morrella.
Four middle school teams from Toppenish Middle School and one team from Toppenish High School, were amongst the 703 teams from around the country and world competing in this year’s VEX Robotics competition game challenge, Sack Attack.
Played with 5” square cloth sacks filled w/ plastic pellets, teams operate their robots from control stations at the sides of a 12’ X 12’ playing field to move as many of the 102 sacks as possible, within a timed period, into designated goal areas.
Winning regional and state competitions, these are the Toppenish, WA VEX Robotics Teams who competed at the World Championships in Anaheim, CA:
•“BOCA”: #609C, Toppenish HS
•Robolicious: 7069A. Congrats, for placing #36 overall in the middle school level of competition! (all girls team!)
VEX Robotics Competitions engage middle and high school students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education through exciting, head-to-head robotics competitions that are fun as well as educational, enabling students to learn, practice, and use many academic and life skills. University of Washington GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness For Undergraduate Programs) provided funding for 14 school districts to participate in the VEX Robotics program.
